Consumers Beware of UK Lottery Email Scam
The Consumers’ Association of Ireland (CAI) is advising consumers to be wary of a new wave of UK Lottery Prize Winning notification scams by email and text occurring over recent days.
Dermott Jewell, Chief Executive of the Consumers’ Association of Ireland (CAI) advises that “Lottery Scams are Increasing and even the National Lottery UK advise on their website that all email should be treated with absolute caution. It’s important to note also that this applies to the Spanish and other lotteries.”
As a general rule the CAI advises consumers to note the following:
The UK Lottery – DON’T tell you how much you have won in an email;
-
The UK Lottery – DON’T ask any player for a name, address or bank information;
-
NEVER – Disclose any personal information
-
NEVER – Click on links on these emails
-
NEVER – call any number given in an email – it will likely route you to a highly expensive premium rate line.
