Your rights as a consumer
Retail outlets selling food must, by law, sell food that is safe to
eat. Food Hygiene Regulations (1950-89) and EU Food Hygiene Directives
control the sale of food from all outlets including shops, supermarkets,
takeaways and restaurants. The Sale of Goods and Supply of Service Act
1980, which states that goods should be of merchantable quality, fit for
their purpose and as described, also applies to the sale of food. A wide
range of European Labelling Regulations require that certain information
be given on the labels or packages of most foodstuffs.
